This policy is also in effect for other parents picking up children for play dates or carpooling.
Parent/Teacher Conferences: Conferences are scheduled twice a year. A written assessment will be reviewed with you to foster an understanding where your child is developmentally. We will discuss how we teach and encourage growth in your child and answer any questions you might have. If for any reason you wish to have a conference at an earlier date simply make an appointment with your child’s teacher. We encourage all parents to attend these conferences and we always welcome any questions or concerns. If you are unable to attend during the conference times, please arrange with your child’s teacher for an alternate time or a phone conference.
Snacks & Lunches: Snacks and lunches are to be provided by the parents. Please provide food that fit the nutritional guidelines and that your child will enjoy. Information on healthy food and beverage choices is handed out at orientation and is also posted on the parent information board.
Field trips and Special Guests: Part of our educational philosophy is to provide active hands-on learning experiences for each of our themes. Field trips and special guests play a major role in this. We try to provide at least one outing or visitor each month. We welcome parents to come into the classroom and do a theme related activity and to join us on our outings. It is a wonderful way to share and support your child’s learning! When traveling to a field trip, parents are responsible for transporting their child to and from the field trip location. Parents may carpool or have another parent responsible for their child with a written note giving permission. Staff will not be allowed to transport a child.
Outside Play: Each class has an allotted 45 minutes out on the playground each day. Physical activity is important to young growing bodies and also a great time for social play. Please be sure to have the proper attire for each season. We go outside in every type of weather. We recommend snow pants and boots for snowy days, rain gear for the rainy days and sunscreen and hats for the sunny days. Please apply sunscreen prior to your child’s arrival. If there is extremely inclement weather the children will not go outside.
Birthday Parties: If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday at school with a special snack we would love to help you! Please let us know what day you would like to celebrate and we will let you know how many children will be there on that day and if there are any allergies to be considered. If you are planning an outside of school party, you may place invitations for the entire class at their cubbies. If you plan not to invite the entire class we ask you to please mail your invitations.

Child Supervision: To keep your children safe at all times we strictly adhere to the child/teacher ratio. The Two’s class will have no more than 10 students to two staff, the Three’s will have no more than 14 students to two staff and the Pre-K will have no more than 16 students with two staff. In the event a teacher needs to leave the classroom, a floater teacher will step in to assist to maintain the proper ratio. Our classrooms have windows from the hallway and from classroom to classroom to assist in being able to see all the children at all times.

Teacher/Parent Partnership & Responsibilities: We at Love of Learning are so thrilled to be teaching your child and want to make their preschool experience the best possible. To do so an open communication between the parents and teachers is key. Please let us know if your child is experiencing something at home that may affect their school day and we will inform you of how your child is and what they are experiencing at school. Love of Learning will ensure your child has a healthy, clean and safe learning environment. We will ensure the proper ratio of student to child will always be maintained, that children have adequate outside play each day, that healthy snacks will be provided. Each child will have plenty of learning and play opportunities to encourage growth at their level. Parents we expect your child to arrive healthy, fed and clean at the appropriate class time. If there is any concerns or information you want to tell the teacher please do so at the start of your child’s day. We look forward to this partnership!
Fire Drills, Evacuations and Shelter in Place: Each month all the students and staff practice evacuating the building using three possible exits. Twice a year we practice a shelter in place drill in the event the area outside of our building is not safe. Emergency food and water is kept on site in the event of such a situation. In the event of an actual emergency, parents will be notified on their cell phones. Student will be relocated to one of two locations until parents come retrieve their child. The first location is at the Hampton Motors at 12 Midhampton Ave. across the street from the playground. The second location is at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge at 3 Old Country Road in Quogue.
Behavior Management: The teachers at Love of Learning have many years of experience and training on encouraging positive behaviors and managing difficult behaviors. We always encourages the positive or desired behavior first. For example: “I love how Suzy and John are taking turns with that truck! They are sharing so nicely.” All children want to hear praise and most will be quick to try what the others are doing to earn it.
As we know sharing is difficult for pre-school aged children. Teachers may guide that experience by modeling language ex: ”May I have a turn with the truck?”, or when the timer goes “beep, beep” it is your turn to give the truck to John.” or “You have had that truck along time, can we give it to John for his turn? Lets do it together.” We always ask the children to use their words to express their wants and needs. This “use your words” technique leads the way for the children to problem solve for themselves. “Suzy, you did such a good job telling John you wanted the truck. Can you give us some ideas to how we can solve this problem since you both want the truck?” As children become more comfortable with this process they become more independent communicators and problem solvers.
For a chid who is defiant or may possibly hurt herself or another child, the teacher will guide the child to a quiet space in the class room and sit with her while encouraging her to think about the behavior that led to this situation. The child then has an opportunity to calm down and speak with the teacher about what is upsetting her. The child will be encouraged to use her words to express her feelings and together the child and teacher find a solution to the problem. The process will be as positive as possible and the child will rejoin the class.
